Les biblioteques universitàries i el suport a la recerca

The European Higher Education Area and the European Research Area are currently two key objectives for university learning, teaching and research in all European universities. University libraries must meet the challenges by offering the best library services to the academic community. In drafting the second strategic plan, Rebiun (Network of University Libraries) gathered comments and suggestions from professionals in Spanish university libraries. This article presents the reflections and suggestions contributed by the author regarding the support services that university libraries could offer for university research.L'espai europeu d'educació superior i l'espai europeu d'investigació són actualment dos objectius clau per a l'aprenentatge, la docència i la recerca de totes les universitats europees. Les biblioteques universitàries han de contribuir a aquests reptes, oferint els millors serveis bibliotecaris a la comunitat acadèmica. En la fase d'elaboració del seu segon Pla estratègic, la REBIUN (Red de Bibliotecas Universtarias) va recollir reflexions i suggeriments de diferents professionals de les biblioteques universitàries de l'Estat espanyol. En l¿article següent es presenten les reflexions i els suggeriments aportats per l'autora sobre el suport que les biblioteques universitàries poden oferir a la recerca universitària

L'accés obert en els centres de recerca CERCA: anàlisi de Ia producció cientifica i de les polítiques de suport a Ia publicació en obert

[cat] Aquesta tesi estudia la publicació en accés obert en els centres de recerca CERCA, centres que formen part del sistema de recerca, desenvolupament i innovació (R+D+I) de Catalunya. S'analitza la disponibilitat en accés obert dels articles publicats pels investigadors CERCA i els recursos i polítiques per avançar cap a la publicació científica en obert. Els tres objectius generals de la recerca són conèixer l'impacte del moviment de l'accés obert en els canals de publicació dels investigadors CERCA, els recursos d'aquests centres per publicar en obert i les polítiques que ho incentiven. La tesi s'estructura en 5 parts: l. Introducció 2. Objectius i marc metodològic de la investigació 3. Anàlisi dels resultats 4. Conclusions 5. Bibliografia i annexos. S'utilitzen tècniques d'investigació quantitatives i qualitatives complementaries: l'anàlisi de la disponibilitat en accés obert a partir d'una mostra de 3.730 articles, una enquesta enviada a les direccions dels 40 centres, l'anàlisi de textos institucionals i una entrevista realitzada a diversos gestors dels centres CERCA. Els resultats mostren que el 52% dels articles tenen com a mínim una versió en obert en revistes i/o repositoris i que les xarxes socials tenen un rol important en la comunicació científica actual. No hi ha uniformitat en la tipologia de repositoris utilitzats pels centres. El requisit creixent de les entitats finançadores de publicar en accés obert determina el seguiment de les rutes verda i daurada. Els resultats es presenten a partir dels 6 àmbits temàtics que agrupen els centres CERCA: Ciències mèdiques i de la salut, Ciències de la vida, Ciències socials, Ciències, Humanitats i Enginyeria i Arquitectura. El grau de publicació en accés obert en aquests centres evoluciona i esta alineat amb els resultats obtinguts en altres estudis i contextos tant nacionals com internacionals. No obstant, els resultats es donen més aviat per l'alt grau de col·laboració amb co­autors que faciliten la disponibilitat en obert dels articles que pels recursos i les polítiques de suport a l'accés obert dels centres. La tesi es conclou amb unes recomanacions adreçades als gestors dels centres CERCA per avançar en la publicació en accés obert.[eng] This thesis examines the open access publication of CERCA research centres, which form part of the Catalan research, development and innovation system. It analyses the availability in open access of articles published by CERCA researchers, and of resources and policies to advance towards open scientific publication. The three general objectives of the research are to understand the impact of the open access movement on CERCA researchers’ channels of publication, CERCA centres’ resources to publish in open access, and how this kind of publication is encouraged. The thesis is divided into five parts: 1. Introduction, 2. Research objectives and methodological framework, 3. Analysis of the results, 4. Conclusions, 5. Bibliography and annexes. Complementary quantitative and qualitative research techniques are used: an analysis of availability in open access based on a sample of 3,730 articles, a survey sent to the 40 centres, the analysis of institutional texts, and an interview with various heads of CERCA centres. The results show that 52% of the articles had at least one open access version in journals and/or repositories and that social networks play an important role in current scientific communication. There is no uniformity in the type of repositories used by centres. Financing entities increasingly demand open publication, which leads to the adoption of green or gold open access. The results are presented for the six subject areas into which CERCA research centres are grouped: medical and health sciences, life sciences, social sciences, humanities, and engineering and architecture. The extent of open access publication in these centres is evolving and is in line with the results of other studies in national and international contexts. However, the results are due more to the high degree of collaboration with co-authors who facilitate the availability of articles in open access than to the centres’ resources and policies of supporting this kind of publication. The thesis concludes with recommendations for CERCA centre managers to progress in open access publication

Open access availability of Catalonia research output: Case analysis of the CERCA institution, 2011-2015

The open access availability of publications by Catalonia's CERCA research centres was analysed to determine the extent to which authors use open access journals, repositories, social networks and other websites to disseminate their research results. A sample of 3,730 journal articles published by authors from CERCA research centres between 2011 and 2015 and available on Web of Science (out of a total output of 44,423) was analysed to identify how many were available in open access, full-text format. The results revealed that 75,8% of the total (2,828 articles) had at least one version available in open access, but just 52% (1,940 articles) had at least one version available in either journals (whether pure or hybrid open access journals or those with embargo periods) or repositories, a finding that highlights the powerful role played by academic social networks in the sharp increase in open access availability. Of the 2,828 articles for which at least one open access version was found, a total of 9,868 copies were located. With respect to versions, the publisher's final version, i.e. the type formatted for publication by journal publishers, was found in 75,3% of cases. The number of articles published in open access journals (567) was very close to the number of articles published in hybrid journals or journals with embargo periods (624). Only 40,4% of the articles in the sample were located in repositories, being the subject repositories the heaviest used. Fifty percent of the articles (1,881 publications) were posted on academic social networks, the most popular of which were ResearchGate and Academia. According to thematic areas, all six areas (science, life sciences, medical and health sciences, engineering and architecture and humanities) exceeded 70% of articles in open access

The Open Access Observatory

Open Access seems to have reached a flipping point and become a real option when researchers decide where to publish. However the figures provided when someone gives percentages are not clear because there is a lack of coincidence when defining open access. In this paper we would like to explain the project initiated by two Catalan universities, the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), which decided to use a common methodology to measure the different levels of open access in their institution. A methodology that can be used by any institution around the world to make visible their evolution and trends in the Open Access movement. Moreover, we also share a methodology to estimate the expenditure on fees to publish open access. In these two research institutions there is not a central system for processing those payments and therefore we need to make estimations in order to know how much we pay each year. Again, we think this methodology can be used worldwide. Both initiatives configure the initial work of what we called the Open Access Observatory, a project that was created aimed at providing and sharing evidences, methodologies and data in relation to open access publications

El camí a Europa: els serveis d'aprenentatge i recerca a les biblioteques de la UPC

The article shows how the library services of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) manage change and explores the current opportunities available (university, electronic information, etc.) for converting the libraries into centres that actively support training and research at the university level. After providing information about the current university scenario, the article focuses on the road taken by the UPC libraries to overcome at both a conceptual and a practical level the major challenge of the millennium: transforming the traditional university library into a centre with resources for supporting academic teaching and research.L'article pretén mostrar com els serveis bibliotecaris de la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) gestionen els canvis i les oportunitats de l'entorn (universitat, informació electrònica, etc.) per convertir les seves biblioteques en centres actius de suport a l'aprenentatge i a la recerca universitària. Després de presentar l'escenari universitari actual s'explicarà el camí que han iniciat les biblioteques de la UPC per assolir conceptualment i en els seus serveis el primer gran repte del mil·lenni: transformar la biblioteca universitària tradicional en un veritable centre de recursos per al suport a la docència i la recerca acadèmiques
